In this article, we will show you how to link Aadhaar card with EPFO and UAN (Universal Account Number). With the EPFO digitizing all EPF records, it is now mandatory to link your Aadhaar card to your UAN. Read on to know how to do so, and how it can be beneficial.
Benefits when you Link Aadhaar Card with EPFO and UAN
EPFO’s drive to link Aadhaar card to UAN is in public interest to make EPF account handling easy and customer friendly. The most important benefit of linking Aadhaar with UAN is that it increases transparency and makes the verification process easier.
Your Aadhaar card contains all your information, including your bio metric and demographic details. This makes it easier to verify personal details. When you link Aadhaar card with EPFO and UAN, your EPF information is consistent with your Aadhaar card details. That way there are no chance of errors and discrepancies in the data. More importantly, linking ensures that only you can access your EPF account for making EPF withdrawals and payments. Therefore, it’s a step taken by EPFO to enhance security of your EPF account while making it more accessible for you.
Today, most people change jobs often. Linking UAN with Aadhaar frees up EPF members from further verification by their next employer. If your UAN is not linked with your Aadhaar, then you’ll need to furnish proofs to transfer money from your previous account.
Conventionally, when you needed to transfer your EPF account, you had to personally visit your past employer. This is not always possible or easy to do. By linking UAN with Aadhaar, EPFO is trying to do away with the need for employer intervention.
For UAN-Aadhaar linked accounts, transfers happen automatically. That means when you change your job, you need to simply furnish your UAN to your new employer. They will verify your KYC details and open a PF account linked to your UAN. Money in your previous account will automatically get transferred to this new account.
Also, in case you have multiple EPF accounts, you can club all the accounts under one umbrella. With an activated UAN, you can view all your past accounts with one UAN number. This makes it easier for you to track your past accounts. Linking with Aadhaar ensures that you don’t have to submit proof for each and every account while consolidating them together. But why is this important? Why would you want to check previous accounts and consolidate them together? According to this report from livemint.com, out of 150 million EPF accounts, about 90 million are inoperative or inactive. Not only is this a huge burden on the EPFO, but it can cause duplicity and confusion for EPF members. Moreover, you wouldn’t want your hard-earned money to lie idle in an inactive EPF account.
